About our Church

On the 11th March 1807, seven people formed themselves into an Independent Christian Church, at the instigation of an itinerant Preacher, George Greatbatch, and other Ministers who had been present at the opening of the little thatched cottage-style Chapel in North Meols.  Greatbatch became their first Pastor, and served until 1824 when he formed another Church in the neighbouring village of South Hawes, which developed into the town of Southport, and eventually encompassed this part of North Meols.

The original 'Independents' were supported by the Lancashire Congregational Union who paid for Greatbatch's upkeep and continued with financial aid until 1892 when the Church "resolved that after this year we do without the grant".  In 1972, the Congregationalists joined with the English Presbyterians to form the United Reformed Church.
Various Chapels have been erected on this site until the present building was opened on the 5th June 1901, in front of the large Sunday School building which dates from 1893.

A full 60-page history of the Church was published for the Bi-Centenary celebrations in 2007, and copies can be obtained from the author, Geoff Lloyd, at ghlloyd1@hotmail.co.uk in the sum of £4.

We are a broad church whose congregation has come from many other denominations over the years as well as those who were brought up in Churchtown. The church is traditional in worship style and welcomes visitors as new friends!
